Palestine-Israel, The third Intifada collect momentum - this week with prisoners at its center

In spite of the reluctant of the Palestinian ruling elite, the third Intifada collect momentum. In Hebron, the pictures of the Shuhada yearly joint action show a chain of Palestinian Authority soldiers blocking the Palestinian demonstrators from clashing with the Israeli state force. However, the general mounting tension, the long hunger striking prisoners, the initiatives of the popular comities... and the Israeli "punishments" together with settler colonialists terror actions feed the gradual escalation. It is not sure yet if it will explode like a powder keg which got a spark or just escalate gradually. The regular locations of joint week end struggle persist with some new ones not yet regular.

Friday, 22-1-13

"Clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli Army/border police are taking place in several locations across the West Bank including Jerusalem, Ofer concentration camp, Qalandiya, Hebron (Shuhada street), Bethlehem, Nablus, Jenin, Tulkarem, villages of popular resistance (Bil'in), Ni'ilin, Nabi Saleh, Jayyus, Qaddum, Ma'asara) and other locations. Dozens of injuries and several arrests reported."

A crowd of Palestinian, Israeli and international activists is gathering at the entrance to Shuhada Street in Hebron, West Bank to start the demonstration "Open Shuhada Street"
Demonstrators march during a protest against the closure of the Shuhada street to Palestinians, in the West Bank city of Hebron February 22, 2013. Hundreds of demonstrators, including foreign and Israeli activists, gathered on Friday, marking the 19th anniversary of the closure of the street, which was closed by the Israeli army in 1994 following the Hebron mosque massacre by Baruch Goldstein, an Israeli settler, who went on a rampage inside Al Ibrahimi Mosque, killing 29 Palestinian worshipers.

After a long confrontation the PA police officers formed a line between the Israeli soldiers and the protestors, brining the demonstration to an end.

A number of Israeli and international activists participate in the protests of Hebron by blocking the Israeli army from reaching the Palestinian protesters.

Bil'in

This Friday too many Bil'in activists went to demonstrate in Hebron and in front of Ofer prison. Thus, the demo was small, but even a peaceful march escorted by Hanna's lovely trumpet suffered several rounds of gas. In the meantime, further south, a handful of shabab was busy climbing the wall, and diverting the soldiers' attention with stones

Jayyous

Jayyous Weekly Demonstration: Reclaiming the Dignity of the Land
"The people of Jayyous invite you to join our weekly demonstrations against the re-routing of the wall further into Jayyous land. The new rout of the wall is in violation of Israel's own supreme court, which in 2009 decided it should be moved to the so-called Green Line. The work on the new rout has already begun, and it will annex 300 Dunams of Jayyous land, uprooting over a 1000 olive trees. Additionally, settlers have placed 6 caravans, expanding the Tsofim settlement on our land. We are asking every one of you to come and be part of our popular resistance to reclaim our land and its dignity.
See you at the Jayyous main mosque, Friday after prayer."

Weekly demonstrations resume in Jayyous
Protesters were met with tear gas canisters at today's demonstration in Jayyous. One person was hit by a canister in the back.

After midday prayer, around 150 residents from Jayyous, joined by a handful of Israeli and International activists, marched from the center of the village towards the fence located on the outskirts of Jayyous.
Soon after protesters reached the area, Israeli army and border police started to shoot tear gas canisters at the crowd. As clashes erupted, Israeli forces chased the demonstrators through the fields while shooting more tear gas canisters, making them run back and forward. One of the protesters was hit by a tear gas canister in his back and was taken away by an ambulance. Confrontations lasted until sunset.
Last Friday, Jayyous, a village located northeast of Qalqilya, began to hold weekly demonstrations against the re-routing of the Wall and expansion of the nearby Jewish-only settlement of Tsofim. Settlers from Tsofim have recently created an outpost of six caravans, expanding the settlement westward, on the village's land. Additionally, the new route of the Wall will annex 300 more dunums of Jayyous land.

Nabi Saleh

"Today's demonstration in NabiSaleh has begun, protesters started to march towards the spring. IOF have invaded the village, accompanied by skunk truck." "IOF are firing rubber coated steel bullets and teargas. IOF have also sprayed Bilal Tamimi with pepper spray." Activists in Nabi Saleh are reporting that the demo is over for the day but the IOF remain at the entrances/exits of the village. One person injured with rubber bullet to the leg, but is in okay condition. "The 14 year old boy who was injured by at least 3 rubber coated steel bullets and kidnapped by the IOF and taken to the check point tower has been evacuated to hospital in Ramallah." Kufr Qaddum

Friday. Over 100 residents from Kufr Qaddum, together with Israeli activists, participated in today’s demonstration, dedicated to Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike. After midday prayers, protesters marched from the center of the village up the main road leading to Qedumim settlement. Confrontations erupted between demonstrators and Israeli forces, which shot large quantities of tear gas canisters, resulting in dozens of protesters suffering from suffocation. The demonstration finished at around 2pm, when Palestinian protesters marched down the road back to the village.

Since 2011, residents of Kufr Qaddum have been resisting the land grab and the road closure by holding weekly demonstrations. The Israeli army often violently suppresses the protests shooting tear gas canisters and stun grenades.

Sheikh Jarrah,

Residents of Sheikh Jarrah in occupied Jerusalem call on you to sleep over at the protest tent set up nar the house of the Shamsaneh family on Thursday, 28 Feburary, 2013. The Shamsneh family members face an eviction under the pretext that they are unprotected tenants despite the fact that they have been living and paying rent for almost 50 years. The eviction threat that hovers over the heads of the Shamsnehs is part of a a clear Zionist plan to displace Sheikh Jarrah Palestinians and to judaize Jerusalem. And the Shamsna family is not the first Palestinian family to face such a threat nor would it be the last, as tens of Palesitnian families in Jerusalem face threats of eviction or house demolition. The open sit-in at the Shamsaneh protest tent begins on Thursday at 4pm, and the evening will include several cultural and art exhibitions that will be announced later.

------------------- Don't say we did not know #350 -----------------------

On Saturday night, 9th February, 2013, at about 9:00pm, settlers came from the direction of the settlements Karnei Shomron and Ganei Shomron to the eastern end of the Palestinian village 'Azzun, and threw stones at village homes. Villagers tried to get rid of them. IDF soldiers who came managed to get the settlers out. Then, soldiers arrived in the village from the north and attacked some villagers. Those soldiers then blocked the entrance to the village with a checkpoint. Ever since, entry to and exit from the village has only been allowed on foot. Five people going through the checkpoint have been arrested.

~~~~~~~~~
On Tuesday, 12th February, 2013, government representatives accompanied by the Green Patrol and police came and destroyed cereals in Umm Batin, Khirbet ElWatan and Laqia, all Bedouin neighbourhoods in the Negev.
That same day, government representatives escorted by police came and again demolished the Bedouin village El'Araqib. They continued and demolished part of a home belonging to the El'Uqbi family in El'Araqib.
Palestine-Israel, The struggle escalate with focus on the hunger strike of administrative prisoners*
Akraba, Bil'in, East Jerusalem (Beit Safafa, Isawiah, Sheikh Jarah), Jayyus, Ma'asara, Nabi Saleh, Ni'ilin, Quadoom, South of Hebron Hills, South West (Beit Ummar)
The Israeli settler colonialist efforts to transfer Palestinians - both within the older 1948 borders and in the new 1967 ones intensify. The Bedouins who remained with only 5% of their pre 1948 lands suffer from the state efforts to take the remaining lands and transfer them to few locations. The (joint) struggle is focused on Arakib village who was demolished nearly 50 times the last two years. In the 1967 occupied regions the transfer efforts are in area "C" - mainly near colonialist settlements in the south and in the Jordan valley, Areas Israel is planning to annex even when it will be forced to retreat from most of the 1967 occupation. However, the energies of the popular struggle are around the issue of partial hunger strike of administrative detainees rearrested after they were released in accordance of the agreement to release Gilad Shalit.
Ofer concentration camp
Over 1000 Palestinians heeded the call by the popular committees and gathered in protest in front of Ofer prison near the town of Betunia in support of hunger striking prisoners.
The Friday prayer protest which was organized by the Popular Committees, was titled “Friday of breaking the silence” in support of Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike, Samer Isawi, Ayman Sharawneh, Tareq Qa’adan and Jafar Iz Eldin (who have been on a partial hunger strike over 200 days). Protesters called for their release and the release of all Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.
Upon the end of the Friday prayer, protesters marched towards the fences of the military prison and in response the Israeli army started immediately firing barrages of sound grenades and tear gas canisters at protesters which lead to clashes with the protesters. The army fired live ammunition; rubber coated steel bullets and tear gas canisters. As a result, over hundred protesters received medical treatment for injuries from rubber coated steel bullets or tear-gas grenades and asphyxiation. Thirteen protesters were transferred to hospital, two injured from live ammunition in their shoulders and the rest from rubber coated bullets. They are all in stable condition.
Bil'in
This Friday most Bil'in activists went to demonstrate in Ofer to demand freedom to hunger striking prisoner Issawi and other prisoners, so the local demonstration was smaller than usual. The army reminded us that it would skunk and gas us even if no stones are thrown, but after a few rounds of unprovoked army violence, a few shabab started returning gas canisters to the soldiers and tried to get them to retreat with stones. A strong wind allowed the demonstration to continue for quite a while, until the demonstrators decided to call it a day
Maasara
Two protests were held in al Maasara in solidarity with Samer Issawi and all Palestinian prisoners and hunger strikers.
The first one, a direct action, took place at around 11am, before the midday prayer. Thirty activists reached the entrance of the nearby Efrat illegal settlement - the second biggest settlement in the West Bank, in the Etzion area. At the beginning, faced by just two security guards, the demonstrators managed to enter through the main gate, raising a Palestinian flag and sticking posters of Samer Issawi. A few minutes later, dozens of Israeli policemen and border police agents arrived at the scene, joined, according to a demonstrator, by members of the Israeli army special forces. As the army and border police were blocking the road, they started throwing sound bombs and tear gas canisters at demonstrators. Only when the Israeli army and border police were there, settlers, who had been staring at the scene, began to act violently against protesters.
Five demonstrators were injured, including one Palestinian, one international activist and three journalists.
The action lasted for twenty minutes till the demonstrators headed back towards al Ma’sara and Jorat Al Shama, followed by almost 200 soldiers and policemen.
The second action started around 12.30am. Demonstrators held the usual Friday's protest at the junction of the main road. When they arrived, Israeli soldiers had already blocked the road and were ready to shoot tear gas. Then, the number of marchers was reduced to 15 people, who made a sit-in lasting around one hour.
Nabi Saleh
Today's unarmed demonstration in Nabi Saleh marched in support of Palestinian hunger strikers, including Samer Issawi, Jafar Ezzedine, Tareq Qa’adan and Yousef Shaaban Yassi. As usual, the demonstration was violently attacked by Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF). During today's demonstration, the IOF opened fire with rubber bullets, tear gas, sound grenades ans skunk An 18 year old women, Rawan Tamimi, was injured when an IOF sound grenade hit her in the head and exploded. She was evacuated to hospital in Ramallah and remains in hospital over night. IOF also injured at least 3 others with rubber bullets and many others suffered from tear gas inhalation. IOF once again sprayed skunk inside the village and at houses - in once instance the IOF used a stun grenade to break the windows of the house of belonging to Bassem and Nariman Tamimi and skunk was sprayed inside the house.
Kufr Qaddum
Several protesters were injured from tear gas canisters and gas inhalation in today's (Friday) demonstration in Kufr Qaddum. Approximately 150 Palestinian, joined by a handful of Israeli and international activists, participated in today’s weekly demonstration in Kufr Qaddum.
At around 12 am, after midday prayers, protesters marched from the center of the village up the main road leading to Qedumim settlement. Clashes between Palestinian youth and Israeli soldiers had already erupted when the Israeli military began bulldozing pre-made barricades. The clashes continued as Palestinian resisted by throwing stones and the Israeli army shot tear gas canisters directly at people. The demonstration lasted for over two hours during which protesters went back and forward along the main road.
One journalist was hit with a tear gas canister on his foot and collapsed; he was carried away and treated by the ambulance crew. An elderly woman from the village had to be stretchered away from her house as a result of overexposure to tear gas. At least three protesters, Odeh Abd Alfattah (20), Rani Ali (30) and Mohammad Salih (25) were also reported to be hit by tear gas canisters, without any of them resulting in serious injury.
Tel Aviv - Jaffa
Demonstration in support of Samer Al-'Issawi.
Samer al-Issawi is a Palestinian political prisoner from 'Issawiyeh (1967 occupied east Jerusalem), who has been on a partial hunger strike in Israel's prison for more then 200 days. Although released in a prisoner-swap deal in October 2011, Israel re-arrested Samer claiming he violated the terms of his release by leaving Jerusalem even though the place of his arrest was Hizmeh, which is within the Jerusalem municipal boundaries. Samer has been hunger striking since July 29, 2012, and according to recent reports his health has been fast deteriorating, putting his life in danger. Joining solidarity demonstrations in Palestine and all over the world, a group of Jaffa-based activists began a daily vigil in solidarity with Samer 'Issawi and all political prisoners at clock tower square, a famed local landmark. Protesters, both Palestinian and Jews, attended the second vigil, calling for the release of 'Issawi and all political prisoners, as well as putting an end to administrative detention as an illegal punitive measure by the state.
Palestine-Israel, The joint struggle continue along with the mounting tension for the nearing post-election earth quack*
The tactic of tent(s) building direct actions continue with internationals but Israelis only as media and support part. The harsh escalation of suppression expressed more in house demolition than in direct actions clashes, but even in the Friday demos we experience an escalation of harassment of the state forces. Both in Israel Media and the public arena the mounting international pressure and the stubborn refusal of the ruling elite to yield bring the aura of an imminent disaster. The cracks within the ruling elite expand and threaten the efforts to invest increasing part of the national product in the settler colonialist project while recruiting the support of the organized orthodox Jewish parties by increasing benefits to their communities.
South West Bank committee against settlement and apartheid wall
South West region Today, the South West Popular Committee along with international activists embarked on a new effort to establish a village, Canaan, on Palestinian land in South Hebron Hills. The village's name was not accidental. We wanted to declare that we are the indigenous people of Palestine. We are the descendants of the Canaanites and our ties to the land can never be broken or taken away. Early last night, various Palestinian activists from a wide array of villages in the South West Bank area along with international activists met in a home to discuss plans for the coming day. Signs were prepared which stated 'Our Land is Our Right', 'Canaan Village' and a declaration of intent which stated that "we are the sons and daughters of the Cananites, we establish Canaan Village on endangered Palestinian land." "We declare that it is our natural right to develop, reclaim, improve, use and live on all our lands free and without threat from occupiers/colonizers."
South West Bank Committee have organized a protest today 8/2/2013 to open the road connects Hebron with southern villages; hundreds of Palestinians have participated in this protest. This road was blocked by the Israeli occupation forces 10 years ago depriving 10s of thousands of Palestinians from using this main road as part of the Israeli occupation movement restriction movement imposed on Palestinians. Protesters chanted slogans against Israeli apartheid, in addition to slogans asking for the freedom of movement, and slogans calling for the release of Palestinian prisoners in the Israeli occupation jails. The protest was suppressed violently by the Israeli occupation forces.
Feb. 9, 2013: In the early morning hours, following a night of planning, we established Canaan as our first attempt, in the south of Yatta (the entrance to Twani). Within less than a minute, while we barely managed to establish the tent, an occupation jeep arrived. The occupation soldiers encircled us and told us we must leave. We refused to obey such a racist demand. An officer of the occupation army then went on to demolish our tent, steal our additional tents and equipment and violently prevent us from reclaiming our land and our belongings. Several hours later, we went on with a much larger group of activists, international supporters and an especially large number of journalists, to the east Yatta, near Ein Mai'in, Hazawai, we established a large tent and began building a room from stones of the land. Within half an hour, we were heavily encircled by at least 6 jeeps of the occupation forces. A large military vehicle which fires skunk water was brought in. We were told that we have 10 minuets to leave the area and that the land was a 'closed military zone'. We did not yield of course and were immediately showered upon by heavy skunk water. Occupation soldiers then went on to attack journalists and arrest them. They beat an elderly woman and other activists. In several instances, activists jumped in and prevented with their bodies the arrest of two people. After several hours of struggling with the occupation soldiers which numbered more than 50, 4 journalists, 8 Palestinians and 2 international activists were arrested, our tent was destroyed and we were prevented from returning to our land. For many hours during the hot afternoon, hundreds of activists remained in the area and demanded the right to return to the Canaan Village.
Bilin
This Friday in Bil'in: (Feb. 8, 416th weekly demonstration)
"There seems to be a tendency to escalation from the side of the army recently. Last week the soldiers started shooting gas from the moment the first cars could be seen nearing the demonstration area, perhaps because the rain made them eager to finish things early. This week gas was shot in high quantities and directly at people. The army slowed down the gas showers only after most peaceful demonstrators had been forced back, and the shabab took over with their stones covered by a favorable wind (as we know, stone throwers are a lesser threat to the army than people chanting slogans). When the shabab decided to head home, soldiered crossed the wall with the skunk truck, but didn't manage to provoke the shabab to return. The presence of Ashraf, who had been arrested in Burin last week, was greatly missed."
Activists on the ground report that Israeli Occupation Forces have been firing non-stop teargas, rubber bullets and skunk. At least 4 people have been hit by rubber bullets and 2 with teargas canisters and many people overcome by the teargas.
Activists on the ground in Nabi Saleh are reporting that dozens of IOF entered the village for at least 30-40 minutes and have now withdrawn. While in village, the IOF fired lots of teargas, stun grenades, rubber bullets and skunk. Reports of journalists deliberately being targeted by IOF with teargas and stun grenades. Skunk also fired directly at houses. Reports of at least 10 people injured by rubber coated steel bullets and at least 2 by teargas canisters, including one hand injury as a result.
"Quite shaken after the last round of shooting in Nabi Saleh. The soldiers invaded the village, spraying skunk water, shooting rubber bullets, sound bombs and gas in every direction. We ran to hide inside a house, and they tried shooting several sound bombs into it, shaking the house, and those inside it."
Tel Aviv - Jaffa
Samer al-Issawi is a Palestinian political prisoner from 'Issawiyeh (Jerusalem), who has been on a hunger strike in Israel's prison for 202 days. Although released in a prisoner-swap deal in October 2011, Israel re-arrested Samer claiming he violated the terms of his release by leaving Jerusalem even though the place of his arrest was Hizmeh, which is within the Jerusalem municipal boundaries. Samer has been hunger striking since July 29, 2012, and according to recent reports his health has been fast deteriorating, putting his life in danger. Joining solidarity demonstrations in Palestine and all over the world, a group of Jaffa-based activists began a daily vigil in solidarity with Samer 'Issawi and all political prisoners at clock tower square, a famed local landmark. Protesters, both Palestinian and Jews, attended the second vigil, calling for the release of 'Issawi and all political prisoners, as well as putting an end to administrative detention as an illegal punitive measure by the state.
Another way to steal land from Palestinians is to declare that land as a National Park.
On Monday, 26th January, 2013, before sunrise, staff from the Israel National Parks Authority arrived with Municipality of Jerusalem workmen to Wadi Rababa in Silwan. They were escorted by Border Police, regular police, the dog unit and bulldozers. They broke into privately owned land and started demolishing fences, terraces, sheds and storerooms, and caused damage to ancient olive trees. They undertook work for the creation of a National Park that had been announced in the area.
During the activity they made their dogs attack Palestinians protesting the robbery of their land and damage to their property. Some were injured and some arrested.
Palestine-Israel, The joint struggle compete in the news media with the intensifying of repression and transfer*
Though the imperial powers tolerance for the Israeli repression and transfer diminish, Israel mainly respond with uneasy disregard. The world as large and even us within are waiting to see if there really was a shift in the blanc of power within the Israeli ruling elite and if the political turbulence in the region will contribute to any improvement in the Palestine-Israeli struggle. It is not clear if the intensification of Israeli transfer and repression efforts are just the last spasm of a dead end or a more desperate line of disregard of reality. In a month or two the picture may clear and till then, the old Tsumud (persistence) will continue. The intensification of the activities of the higher comity of grass root popular comities - mainly in the weekly "tent villages projects" started in Bab Al-Shams may be more than just an expression of optimism.
Al-Manatir
Activists build a new village #Almanatir near Burin, Feb. 2, 2013
PRESS RELEASE: Hundreds of Palestinians build huts on lands of Burin village (Nablus District): http://on.fb.me/UcOxOe
In January, Palestinian activists started a new wave of tented protest camps in the West Bank. The first, the Bab al-Shams village was set up in an area where Israel plans to build the "E1" settlement, severing the West Bank from Jerusalem.
Then, locals established the al-Karamah (Dignity) village in Beit Iksa, northwest of Jerusalem, which is set to be tightly encircled by Israel's separation wall.
Last week, activists set up the Al-Asra, or prisoners, protest village in the village of Anin, northwest of Jenin.
On Saturday, they erected a new tented protest village south of Nablus, the fourth such initiative in recent weeks.
Around 200 supporters from across the West Bank set up tents on an area of Burin village land on land slated for confiscation by a neighboring settlement.
Residents said the new village was established to protest Israeli land confiscation for settlement building. Burin is squeezed between the Bracha and Yitzhar settlements, and the target of regular settler violence.
They are calling the new encampment the "Al-Manatir neighborhood" after the traditional stone huts built for watchmen in Palestinian agricultural land.
Israeli forces immediately moved to shut down the area, and blocked traffic at the nearby Zaatara checkpoint, stopping several buses of activists destined for the village, witnesses told Ma'an.
Soldiers fired tear gas and sound grenades to disperse the activists.
Israeli forces have moved to evacuate the camps and dismantle their structures.
They evacuated the protest tent set up earlier on Saturday by Palestinian activists in Nablus, leading to clashes which injured at least 20 people and 3 get arrested one of them Ashraf abu rahma from bil'in.
Nabi Saleh
"Activists report that the weekly demonstration has started approximately 30 minutes ago and IOF immediately invaded village and have fired lots of teargas. A number of people have collapsed because of tear gas inhalation.
Manal reports: Think they are shooting gas includes nerve gas, 2 of the youth couldn't move after they smell some of it and we had to evacuate them. The same new breathing gas was tested two weeks ago instead of the usual tear gas.
The demonstration was quite short today, due to the pouring rain, which the soldiers tried to match with a rain of tear gas canisters. Several activists fainted from the gas, and one was hit by a canister in his waist. All are well now, though. We dried with tea and some fantastic Hubiza dish by the fireplace, enjoying the smell of wood, and the crackling fire, and wished for the days in which we could simply come and enjoy warmth, and food and the company of friends, and naught more. I guess that this, amongst other things, is what we are fighting for."
South of Hebron Hills
This week we will accompany Palestinians farmers and shepherds to their lands in several locations in South Hebron hills. Harassment of Palestinian farmers and shepherds in the area by both settlers and the army continues.
This coming Saturday, February 2, we need as many activists as possible to accompany them and stand up for their rights. There is a direct link between the number of activists who come to accompany the farmers and their ability to harvest and work their lands.
